Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia
Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Oceans

The Oceans habitat is designed with two towers that are connected by a tunnel – open to visitors on a wonderful underwater journey. With a water capacity of about 6000m³, Oceans is home to unique creatures like Angel Sharks, Blackchin Guitarfish, Grey Reef Sharks, Sand Tiger Sharks, Bull Rays, Sawfish, and many more.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

In this habitat, you can see common octopus, spiny lobsters, dreamfish, sea bass, Mediterranean barracuda, pearly razorfish, spotted catshark, dogfish, undulate rays, and many more.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Antarctic

The mysterious continent of Antarctica has been a subject of intrigue for decades. To mimic the continent, Oceanografic’s Antarctica habitat is completely covered with ice and snow throughout the year. The Antarctica habitat at Oceanografic is home to the Gentoo Penguins, flightless birds that thrive in such conditions.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Arctic

Oceanografic’s Arctic habitat is divided into two levels: the first level provides a bird’s eye view of the ice-filled ecosystem, while the second level brings you face-to-face with the animals. Standing at about 12 meters in height, one can expect to find the captivating Beluga Whale family floating around in this installation.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

This habitat has been installed on the central inlet in a lake within the premises. Here, one can expect to find the Slender-snouted Crocodiles gently resting in their natural environment.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Wetlands/Aviary

Look out for the Eurasian Spoonbills, Glossy Ibis, and more.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Islands

The Islands is another outdoor installation at Oceanografic, designed so as to best represent the South American coast. This is where researchers study the behavior of animals like sea lions, walruses, and seals. All these animals can be identified with a signature trait: the wide, flat legs that they use for movement.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Lakes

Oceanogràfic has a living lake with diverse aquatic birds, including red-crested pochard, common shelduck, and whooper swan. Various bird species visit year-round from Albufera Natural Park and the former Turia River bed.

Divided into six ‘jewels’ or aquariums, nothing can prepare you for the tiny, unique, brightly-colored inhabitants here. One can identify 16 species, including the Big-belly Seahorse, Peacock Mantis Shrimp, Boxfish, and more.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Access Building

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Oceanic Islands

This habitat explores the ecosystem of some of the most remote corners of our planet. A walk through the Oceanic Islands covers five areas, each representing a different part of Earth. Guests can learn about the evolution of species here and find animals like the Aldabra Giant Tortoise, Hawaiian Goose, and more.

Habitats Inside Oceanografic Valencia

Mediterranean Tortoise

A unique aspect of the Mediterranean Tortoise habitat is that it has been created with the intention of preserving three endangered species: the Cartagena Rockrose plant, the spur-thighed Testudo Graec tortoise, and the Hermann Tortoise. The installation accurately represents a typical Mediterranean ecosystem.

Oceanografic Valencia Animals

Think of a marine animal between A-Z and you’ll almost certainly find it at Oceanografic. It is home to almost 45,000 animals across 500 species. Several species have been rescued from unsafe environments and cared for here, like the sea turtles. Here’s a deeper look into a few most-visited animals:

Beluga Whales in Oceanografic Valencia

Beluga Whales

Beluga Whales are predominantly found in the Arctic Ocean. They attain their white coloring between 5-12 years of age and mainly feed on small fish, crustaceans, and the likes. Their bodies have a thick layer of fat that allows them to adapt to the freezing cold of the Arctic. Adult Beluga Whales can weigh up to 1,500 kgs and grow up to 5 meters in length.

Sea Lions in Oceanografic Valencia

Sea Lions

Most sea lions are usually found in the Pacific Ocean. They can be easily spotted from a distance due to their dark or light brown color on seemingly oily skin. Standing tall, they are generally about 2.5-3 meters in height and weigh between 150 kg to 300 kg depending on their gender. Sea lions feed on octopus, squid, and small fish and spend time on land and in water.

Sawfish in Oceanografic Valencia

Sawfish

The most defining characteristic of Sawfish is their long mouth that looks like a sword or a saw; they use this feature to dig up and eat dead underwater animals. Sawfish also typically have between 16-37 teeth, and can measure up to more than 7 m in height. Also known as carpenter fish, these are found primarily in tropical parts of the oceans and seas.

Bull Rays in Oceanografic Valencia

Bull Rays

From the family of stingrays, Bull Rays have been named so due to their heads, which are shaped like bulls. They measure about 200 cm in height and can weigh up to 120 kg. Bull Rays are mostly found near coasts and tropical waters and generally feed on crustaceans or mollusks. A Bull Ray’s spine is full of venom and can cause immense pain if stung.

Gentoo Penguins in Oceanografic Valencia

Gentoo Penguins

Generally found in the Antarctic region or in New Zealand, Gentoo Penguins’ most notable features are their orange bills and feet, and a white patch on the forehead. While they cannot fly, they are proficient swimmers, which comes in use during migration or hunting for food. Gentoo Penguins are quite small in size, with the adults measuring up to 30 inches in height.

Grey Reef Shark in Oceanografic Valencia

Grey Reef Shark

Native to temperate waters, one can find Grey Reef Sharks in the shallower waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. These sharks generally measure between 4-4.75 ft in height depending on their gender, and prey on rays, small fish, squid, octopus and more. Similar to other commonly known sharks, these have big eyes and a large, round snout.

Mediterranean Barracuda in Oceanografic Valencia

Mediterranean Barracuda

Considered to be a predatory fish with large, sharp teeth, the Mediterranean Barracuda feasts on a variety of fish, squid, and crustaceans. They can be identified by their thin, elongated, silver body that is covered with dark bands and measure up to 1 meter in height. These barracuda are generally found in the Mediterranean part of the world or the Western Atlantic side.

Sand Tiger Shark in Oceanografic Valencia

Sand Tiger Shark

These are generally found in the shallow, tropical waters and coastlines of almost all oceans. In length, Sand Tiger Sharks measure between 3 to 6 meters, depending on their age. Their bodies are round and stout, while their heads are pointed in shape, and they devour almost all kinds of small fish. Despite their seemingly terrifying look, Sand Tiger Sharks are generally not aggressive towards humans unless provoked.

Other beautiful animals here Zebra Sharks, Damselfish, Scarlet Ibis, Pacific Sea Nettles, Bottlenose Dolphins, Moon Jellyfish, Mediterranean Snakelocks Sea Anemone, Leaf Fish, and many more.
